Expert tips for applying to college

Looking for advice about applying to college? Here are some top tips from local Admissions Counselors!

1. Read and follow the application directions carefully

Colleges need information in specific ways to make it easier to review and compare applications. If you don't understand the instructions, ask for help!

2. Meet the deadlines

Submit your applications early to stay ahead! Know your deadlines and get everything in before the due date. This includes financial aid and scholarship application deadlines.

3. Do your research

Know what’s important to you while looking at colleges. Do you want to be far from home? Do you prefer a small or big school? Are you interested in honors programs, sports, fraternities or sororities?

Visit campuses, consider all the costs, look at the data and keep an open mind. Use our Making Your Decision guide to help you consider all the variables and read how to decide where to go to college for helpful steps.

4. Ask for help

School counselors, GEAR UP advisors, ASPIRE mentors and college admissions staff are here to help you. Visit your college and career center, school counseling office, or GEAR UP advisor often. Check admissions websites to find your assigned admissions representative. They’re all great resources for your college search!

5. Apply to more than one school

Don’t rely on just one option.* There are many colleges that could be a great fit for you! Aim to apply to 4 to 6 schools that you would be excited to attend. It’s also a good idea to apply to at least one local school. For more information, talk to your counselor.

*If you’re applying Early Decision (ED), have a backup plan with other good-fit colleges in case you’re not admitted in the ED round.

Final thoughts: stay confident

Applying to college can feel challenging, but remember, you have many resources and people ready to help you. Stay organized, be proactive, and keep an open mind. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to finding the right college for you.
